Whether you’re on the Bikini Cleanse, following a vegan lifestyle, paleo diet, or are a vegetarian, we can all agree on one thing: a healthy diet means cutting out the crap! This means removing overly processed foods and excess sugar from our daily food regimen. Easier said than done, right?
When cutting out bad foods from your diet, it’s important to do your homework and read the ingredient label. Sugars come in over 50 different names and forms! Some of these “nicknames” include:
Knowing these names and other pesky ingredients such as “xanthan gum” and “carrageenan,” will help keep your diet clean and your waist lean. The easiest way to avoid nasty ingredients is to stick to natural, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, free-range eggs, whole grains, natural cooking fats and organic meats and seafood. Avoiding packaged foods will help you eliminate spending hours investigating that nutrition label.
Once you cut these ingredients out, the rest is just preference! Some individuals eat meat, some swear by complex carbs and others start the Bikini Cleanse! If you don’t know where to start, try them all! Try a raw vegan diet one week and then go paleo the next. Unless you have moral or ethical convictions that keep you dedicated to a particular lifestyle, it’s beneficial to your body to try different lifestyles to see which works best for you.

We often hear the phrase “abs are built in the kitchen,” but this is only half true! While eating healthy is very important to shrinking your midsection, exercise is extremely important. So what exercises are perfect for flattening that stomach?
Cardio – One of the good things about cardio, is that it helps lose weight everywhere! Running for 20 minutes not only removes fat from your arms and legs, but your abs as well! Running will give you an overall toned look (I mean, have you seen a chubby triathlon runner?) and will help you lose weight in hard to reach areas. *Bad knees/back? Use the elliptical! Adjust resistance when you feel ready to take it to the next level.
Calisthenics – Calisthenics is one of the most effective ways to make that tummy nice and lean! In fact, our favorite ab workout with Charlotte Mooney features all calisthenic exercises! Using your own body weight and fluid movements, calisthenics help create strength using your own body weight against you. When it comes to abs, our favorite exercises are:

Weight Training – No need to fear the weights, bikini babes. Ladies often avoid weight lifting for fear of bulking up instead of getting lean and toned. Luckily, our genetic makeup does not allow for this kind of bulking, and unless you’re taking a lot of testosterone supplements, you can lift weights to help create that toned tummy! Use the following weight lifting exercises for a flat tummy:
Press sit up
Dumbbell side bend
Ab crunch machine
It’s amazing what a little stress can do on your body! When you are experiencing high stress, the hormone known as cortisol is released. Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. This the same hormone that triggers the “fight or flight” response and is extremely important to get s**t done! However, if this hormone is constantly coursing through your body, it wears and tears on your heart, intestines and other vital organs. Not only does this wear on your body but it also increases your appetite, lowers your libido, makes you depressed and increases belly fat. Basically, too much cortisol = BAD.
To eliminate high levels of cortisol, make time to de-stress. If you’re unsure whether you have high cortisol, go to your doctor and get a blood test to see where your levels are at. But it’s safe to say that we could all use a little more “me” time. When making time to relax, write a list of all the things that make you happy (the more items, the better!). This list can include anything from gardening to a spa day to talking on the phone with your friends. Once you’ve finished this list, do at least 3 of these items per day! It may seem hard to squeeze in that extra time at first, but once you do, your mind and body will thank you!
